No. You fight a Level 30 Temple Guardian dog (cannot be killed with Magic) and Level 30 Monks of Zamorak (use Magic attacks, but can be safespotted). Basic combat gear is sufficient.
It is absolutely required to gain access to the entire Morytania region, including Canifis, the Mort Myre Swamp, and beyond. It's a prerequisite for many other quests.
During the quest, you can swap the Golden key for an Iron key at a monument. Optionally, you can bring other specific items (pot, feather, candle, tinderbox, needle, hammer) to swap for purely cosmetic golden versions at other monuments, but only *before* you finish talking to Drezel in the cell and he moves.
