OSRS Beginner Bossing Ladder Guide (Easy Steps into PvM)
Ready to try OSRS bossing? Our simple beginner guide walks you up the ladder, from easy bosses (Giant Mole) towards mid-game goals like Vorkath & Zulrah.
OSRS Beginner Bossing Ladder: Your First Steps into PvM
Jumping into Player vs. Monster (PvM) bossing is one of the most fun parts of Old School RuneScape. Taking down strong monsters for unique loot and that rush of victory is awesome. But where do you even start? You can't just walk into end-game raids!
This guide gives you a suggested "ladder" to climb for beginner and early mid-level players wanting to try bossing. We start with easier fights and slowly increase the difficulty.
Before You Begin: Make sure you have decent mid-game combat stats (aim for 70+ in Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic). You'll also need suitable gear – check our OSRS Gear Progression Guide for ideas! Always bring enough food, potions (combat boosts, prayer restores, anti-poison/antifire if needed), and ways to teleport out. Understand the Combat Triangle too!
Step 1: Giant Mole (Under Falador Park)
- Why Start Here: Very simple fight, low defence, okay starting cash. Mainly tests if you can manage supplies and find the boss when it digs.
- Gear: Melee is best (Dharok's set speeds it up, but standard melee works). Falador Hard Diary locator helps a lot.
- Key Mechanic: Mole digs away, you have to find it again. Needs a light source and spade. Pretty much it!
- Goal: Get used to a simple boss fight loop and managing your inventory.
Step 2: Sarachnis (Forthos Dungeon)
- Why Next: Introduces basic prayer switching (Melee/Ranged) and handling weak minions. A good step up in mechanics but still quite forgiving. Can drop a decent Cudgel.
- Gear: Melee focus. Use a Crush weapon if you have one (Leaf-Bladed Battleaxe, Zamorakian Hasta, Dragon Mace, or the Cudgel itself). Decent armour helps (Barrows pieces, Fighter Torso, Obsidian).
- Key Mechanics: Switches between Melee & Ranged attacks (easy prayer flick). Spawns small spiders (kill them or tank). Has a web attack that briefly freezes you.
- Goal: Practice basic prayer switching and dealing with adds (extra monsters).
Step 3: Barrows Brothers (Morytania)
- Why Here: Classic OSRS! Introduces fighting multiple opponents (briefly in tunnels), prayer drain, and the idea of gear switching (though optional at first). Chance at valuable unique Barrows armour/weapons.
- Gear: Needs ways to deal damage with Magic, Ranged, and Melee. Magic is often key (Trident/Iban's Staff). Ranged works well too (Rune Crossbow/Blowpipe). Whip or Dragon Scimitar for Melee. Gear with Prayer bonus helps combat the drain.
- Key Mechanics: Each brother uses one main combat style (except Akrisae needs specific weapons). Your prayer drains while in the tunnels below. You might fight brothers down there too. Solve a puzzle to open the final chest.
- Goal: Learn basic gear switches, manage prayer points, and handle a fight with multiple stages.
Step 4: King Black Dragon (KBD Lair)
- Why Here: Teaches you anti-dragon mechanics (super important!). Can be done in groups but often soloed. It's an iconic dragon boss fight.
- Gear: Melee (Dragon Hunter Lance/Hasta best, otherwise Whip) or Ranged (Dragon/Armadyl Crossbow with Dragonbane bolts). Crucial: You MUST use an Anti-dragon Shield + Antifire Potion (or Super Antifire). Protect from Melee prayer is standard.
- Key Mechanics: Multiple dragonfire breath attacks (use shield + potion!), plus normal melee hits. Simple fight pattern, but hits very hard without the right fire protection.
- Goal: Master anti-dragon protection and fight a boss that hits harder.
Step 5: Moving Towards Vorkath / Zulrah
These two famous solo bosses are the next big difficulty jump. They need much better mechanics, gear, and stats.
- Vorkath (Requires Dragon Slayer 2 quest): Needs gear switches, specific walking patterns during acid phase, dealing with a zombie spawn, accurate prayer flicks against different attacks (Melee, Magic, Ranged, Dragonfire, Specials). Makes very good, consistent money once mastered. Getting DS2 done via service is an option if needed.
- Zulrah (Requires Regicide quest): A complex fight with rotating phases. You need to know the patterns, move precisely, switch prayers correctly, and swap between Ranged and Magic gear quickly. Can be amazing profit but takes serious learning.
Conclusion: Learn, Adapt, Climb!
This ladder is just a suggestion. Spend time on bosses you find fun or challenging. Watch video guides, check the OSRS Wiki for specifics, and don't stress about dying while learning – it happens to everyone! Getting good at PvM takes practice.
Mastering Vorkath or Zulrah can take a while. If you need help getting stats up faster or completing required quests like Dragon Slayer 2, consider Tons of XP's safe Skilling or Questing Services (always 100% hand-trained!).
